The Inspiration

A man person.

The Story: Can We Smite Him? PLEASE?

Guardian Angel Parael looked directly into his supervisor’s eyes. “I can’t be Patrick’s angel anymore.”

Granuel flicked his wings. “Really? Why should you be relieved of your duties?”

“His mean streak has gone to evil.”

“In what way? Spill all the tea, man.”

“Long list. He has never struck his wife or step-daughter, but he abuses them daily.”

“And?” Granuel encouraged.

He made his disabled tenant pay a huge home repair bill she can’t afford for a home she doesn’t own.”

Granuel sighed. “Oh, how I wish the Almighty would go back to striking people down for things like that.”

And here’s my story, “The Portal Mural

A woman gestured at Ila’s mural, “I swear I could pluck that sunflower right off your painting.”

Ila, who never spoke, smiled. She had trained her whole life for this moment. Everything had to be just right if she was ever to recreate the magical portal.

Aunt Tildi showed her that real meadow—and the occult artform necessary to recreate it.

Tildi told her that day, “this meadow and I will disappear at sundown, When you can paint it perfectly, you can come join us.”

With a crowd watching, Ila stepped into her painted portal.

Everyone thought it was CGI.

The Story: Fine Linen and a View

by Ronda Del Boccio

When my boss gave me a $150 gift certificate to the fanciest restaurant in Branson, I was surprised but not thrilled. I’m not impressed by fancy. I don’t require posh. We could eat twice at a modest eatery for that money.

As usual, I didn’t have a plus one, so I invited my mom and her husband.

I ordered medallions of lamb, which were spectacular. But no need for a take-home box. And my dessert also looked like a child’s portion of custard.

We laughed at the linen tablecloths and gigantic windows offering a stunning view of the parking lot.

Rummy Wars –  Flash Fiction

This is for Friday Fictioneers for 24 March 2023. Feel free to write your own story and click the frog on her post to play with us.

This post is inspired by the PHOTO PROMPT © Liz Young below, which shows a bunch of joker playing cards strewn on a surface. It brought me back to my grandparents’ rummy games. My mom andaunt bought them each Nerf baseball bats so they could swat each other when one gloated too much or won the game.

.

Lucile and Bob sat at the  table playing their almost-daily rummy game. Each had a glass of iced tea and a Nerf baseball bat beside them.

Lou picked up the card her husband Bob had discarded. With a gleeful smile,  she stuck it between two other cards in her hand.

Bob shook his head. “I gave you just what you needed, didn’t I?”

“Yes. Thank you for the nine.” Lou flourished then laid down her fanned-out cards. “Seven, eight, nine, ten, and jack of clubs. And RUMMY!”

Smiling, Bob picked up his foam bat and swatted her on the head.

The Road or the Mirror | Flash Fiction | Friday Fictioneers 13 Jan, 2023

Flash Fiction

Hello and welcome back to another story snack! Here is the 100-calorie-pack of writing, a 100-2ord short story. based on the Friday Fictioneers Writing Challenge for 13 January 2023. Feel free to write your own story and come play. Here’s mine.

PHOTO PROMPT (C) Fleur Lind

Genre: Narrative/memoir

The Road or the Mirror?

With all its heartache, some kicked 2022 to the curb.

Not me. I felt that way about 19, 20, and 21. My soul-crushing 22 far surpassed the them.

So, I said nothing as 22 passed into tearful memories.

And yet, I rise from last year’s ashes.

My traumatized rescue cat, Twitch, learned how to receive love.

The untimely passing of my guide dog brought me a charming, stub-tailed yellow lab named Glamour, who makes me laugh every day. She inspired me to write my first children’s book.

And so, I focus on the road ahead instead of the rear-view mirror.

Pollinators in the Park: 100-Word Flash Fiction

Well, I’m finally playing with the 100-word Friday Fictioneers flash fiction story again! Feel free to write your own take on this prompt and come play!

The objet of the game is to write a story of exactly 100 words inspired by the photo prompt.

PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot and I have no idea what this is supposed to be

“Today, we’re going to Rochester Municipal Park,” said Katie, my guide dog trainer.

I shouted for joy. My new dog jumped up, stub-tail wagging at lightning speed.

Katie laughed. “I knew you’d be happy, Ronda.”

Much had changed since I went to Michigan for my first Leader Dog, including a new sundial in 2017 and my favorite, the 2022 Louise Jones mural featuring local plants and pollinators. Black-eyed susans and purple coneflowers (echinacea), popped up amidst vibrant green blades of grass while bees, moths, and butterflies cavorted around.

I love that all of Jones’s murals feature only local elements.

Here’s a photo from my trip to see this gorgeous mural.
